Salt and Sage started as a little whisper of an idea during performances of Fool for Love, a production Jenny and I co-produced this spring. We had wanted that show to be as visceral an experience for the audience as it had been for us; so to provide a scent of the desert, we saged the space before every performance, a little ritual that lingered in the lighting and left a sweet smoky smell, reminiscent of hay, throughout the room. It was so satisfying to make art on our own terms, to do a play that had such deep reverberations to both our pasts. We wanted to do it again. Though of course, in the theatre doing it again means doing something else. And there is so much we want to do. We have found four wonderful plays to stage in the coming months and cannot wait to get into rehearsals for those. This weekend we got away, to put together this website, to update our personal sites, to finish a draft of a grant application so that it is now ready for an outside eye, and, of course, to breathe the salt air, dip our feet in the cold cold Pacific ocean and rejoice in taking the plunge, of beginning Salt and Sage Productions.
